Organizers of the Norfolk Popcorn Party in September are calling on professional chefs to enter the Popcorn Seasoning Contest.

The street festival is scheduled for downtown Simcoe on September 22, part of the Routes to Roots Film Festival (R2RFF), celebrating Norfolk County’s status as Canada’s leading growing region of popping corn.

Norfolk Popcorn PartyChefs who enter the contest will prepare popcorn seasoning and compete in any category they wish: Sweet, Savoury, Spicy, or Local Ingredients. The general public will have the opportunity to taste the seasonings (on fresh popcorn) at the Norfolk Popcorn Party, then vote on their favourites.

Organizers ask chefs to pre-register by August 20. There is no contest entry fee.

“Six chefs in Norfolk County have expressed enthusiasm about the popcorn seasoning contest,” said Clark Hoskin, founder of the Norfolk Popcorn Party and one of the volunteer organizers. “It’s the first festival of its kind in Canada, and chefs will be able to brag that they participated in the inaugural event.”

Other contests at the Norfolk Popcorn Party include a popcorn seasoning contest for the general public, longest popcorn string contest, popcorn fashion contest for youth, and colouring contest for kids.
